{"id":220383,"date":"2021-09-24T06:00:20","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T05:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/?p=220383"},"modified":"2021-09-24T04:06:17","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T08:06:17","slug":"should-i-exercise-when-im-ill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/inform\/should-i-exercise-when-im-ill\/","title":{"rendered":"Should You Work Out When You\u2019re Ill With a Cough or Cold?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It goes without saying that if you have physically injured yourself, you should consult a medical professional if you\u2019re planning to hit the weights bench &#8211; but for something like a cough or a cold, what\u2019s the harm, right?<\/p>\n<p>As the pandemic threw everyone\u2019s focus onto limiting their exposure to germs and airborne disease it&#8217;s a question that has come up regularly in the past couple of years. And while you should absolutely stay home if you have come into contact with anyone with coronavirus \u2014 no matter how much you might want to get your pump on \u2014 when it comes to a less serious illness such as a cough or cold, is there any benefit to trying to sweat it out with a little exercise? Here&#8217;s what our head of nutrition and resident expert, Dr Adam Collins, has to say.<\/p>\n<h3>Should You Work Out If You Have An Illness?<\/h3>\n<p>Generally, my advice is no. It\u2019s most likely that you won\u2019t be able to tolerate the exercise as much \u2014 i.e. have reduced exercise capacity \u2014 and as such the exercise may exacerbate your symptoms. There is a myth that you can \u201csweat out\u201d an illness through exercise, but I don\u2019t see any logic in this, nor any evidence in the literature. The logic for this myth suggests that as exercise increases core temperature, this will help fight off the infection, but this is a contradiction.<\/p>\n<p>If you have an illness, your non-specific immune response is to increase body temperature anyway, possibly to a level high enough to have a fever. Exercising when ill will either not increase temperature as much as it would under normal circumstances \u2013 possibly due to a higher baseline temperature \u2013 or it will increase the risk of overheating quicker leading to fatigue and impaired performance. And that\u2019s just with minor illnesses such as a cough or cold. If you have a severe illness then you may risk more serious damage to your body and the chance of collapsing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-386012 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_452282451-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"woman with flu trying to exercise\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Are There Any Other Possible Detrimental Effects?<\/h3>\n<p>Given the increased energy expenditure (i.e. calorie demand) during an illness, the additional energy cost of exercise will be a further burden to your body. Hence if you are looking to get exercise \u201cgains\u201d, such as those from <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/resistance-training-research\/\">resistance exercise<\/a>, then the circumstances are totally wrong. You are mainly in a catabolic state already when ill and so you will likely have exercise \u201closses\u201d rather than gains.<\/p>\n<h3>What Are Symptoms Indicate That You Are Too Ill?<\/h3>\n<p>Other than physical incapacity, if you have a fever, high temperature, <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/breathwork-how-to-breath-when-working-out\/\">breathing<\/a> problems or fatigue I would skip the workout.<\/p>\n<h3>If You\u2019re Coming Out Of An Illness, Is It Better To Exercise Outdoors Rather Than Indoors?<\/h3>\n<p>Any place for exercise that necessarily involves a lot of people using an enclosed space, such as gyms and <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/the-best-outdoor-swimming-pools-and-lidos-in-london\/\">pools<\/a>, are not good places if you either want to avoid spreading your infection or illness to others or you want to avoid getting ill from others in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-386011 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-680x383.jpeg 680w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-150x84.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-400x225.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/09\/AdobeStock_305265904-600x338.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some people anecdotally say that some low intensity endurance type exercise outdoors may be of benefit to help clear mucus and phelgm from the respiratory system, but this may be at the latter stages of an illness and needs to be rationalised. For an athlete returning from illness, for example, this may be a good way of reintroducing exercise.
