And while the opening up of society has allowed us some respite, <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/how-to-look-after-your-physical-and-mental-health-post-lockdown\/\">post lockdown anxiety<\/a> remains a very real thing. If you\u2019re suffering, or feel increasingly nervous, restless, or tense as a result of everything, remember: you are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>This is where body tapping can help. Otherwise known as EFT (or emotional freedom technique), it\u2019s an alternative practice to combat physical pain and emotional distress, according to health practitioner Tammy Richards. You might have caught videos of the technique popping up on your Instagram feed recently. \u201dIt is often associated with acupressure as it works with the same principles, however, without the needle,\u201d Richards explains. Curious? Here\u2019s everything you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2>What exactly is body tapping?<\/h2>\n<p>So, you know it\u2019s an alternative method that has its roots in ancient Chinese medicine. But what exactly is body tapping beyond that? Well, it\u2019s an easy and simple way to boost your circulation, which promises to reap a whole heap of other health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTapping the skin on a daily basis enables the free flow of circulation, which the Chinese believe is the absolute epitome of good health,\u201d explains Chinese medicine practitioner and founder of the Hayou Method, <a href=\"https:\/\/katiebrindle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Katie Brindle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She reckons that, by practicing an all-over body tap for as little as one minute a day, you can clear areas of stagnation, support lymphatic drainage, release tension and encourage a smooth flow of blood and \u2018qi\u2019 &#8211; that\u2019s \u2018vital energy\u2019 &#8211; around the body.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1995 by Gary Craig, EFT is used to help both physical and emotional pain. That\u2019s because, as Brindle explains above, tapping strengthens your \u2018Wei Qi\u2019, or your body\u2019s defence mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-312840 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/AdobeStock_336612755-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"EFT tapping\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How does EFT tapping work?<\/h2>\n<p>But how? \u201cEFT lays focus on the body\u2019s energy hot spots, which are otherwise known as meridian points,\u201d explains Richards. Imagine a flow of energy working around these points in your body. \u201cTapping ensures that the energy is flowing correctly and applies pressure to those meridian energy points,\u201d Richards expands. Fun fact: acupressure does this, but with needles. It also acts as an emotional messenger. Think about it. The hairs on your skin stand on end when you\u2019re scared, or you blush when you are embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTapping reduces cortisol, which in layman\u2019s terms means it can help you to feel more relaxed, can reduce emotional imbalance, and can lower internal stress,\u201d Brindle concludes.<\/p>\n<h2>What does the science say?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Richards, several studies support the benefits of EFT tapping. \u201cOne study of 5000 patients across 11 US-based clinics over a five-year period showed a 90 percent success rate in treating anxiety and depression\u201d, she explains.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, there are a handful of Harvard Medical School papers that conclude with the notion that by stimulating the body\u2019s meridian points, you can significantly reduce activity in a part of your brain called the amygdala, according to Brindle. \u201cThe amygdala is like a personal alarm system. It\u2019s triggered when you experience trauma or fear, flooding the body with <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/eustress-can-stress-ever-be-good-for-you\/\">stress hormones<\/a>,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6381429\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a>, both Brindle and Richards do point out that having only been founded 25 years ago, tapping is a relatively new practice and so lacking in more extensive scientific research.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-312841 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/AdobeStock_194438143-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"EFT tapping and its role on the brain\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ready to do it yourself? \u201cConsistency is key. Tapping is not a one-time wonder. You won\u2019t practice once and experience life-changing results,\u201d says Richards. She advises first-timers to adopt structure to their EFT tapping practice and try to partake in it at the same time every day.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Body Tap: Your Step-By-Step Guide<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Identify the matter you wish to address<\/h3>\n<p>Firstly, identify the matter that you wish to address. Use this as your focal point throughout your practice. Make sure you are clear and concise and focus on one point at a time.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Rate your distress<\/h3>\n<p>Using a scale of 1 &#8211; 10, identify how much distress the issue is causing you and be honest with yourself. This will serve as a means to monitor progress over time.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Set up your phrase<\/h3>\n<p>Set up your phrase. Make it short and sweet as you will be repeating it often. A nice starting point is: &#8220;Even though X is present, I accept positivity and change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>4. Focus on each meridian<\/h3>\n<p>There are 12 in total:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lung<\/li>\n<li>Large intestine<\/li>\n<li>Stomach<\/li>\n<li>Spleen<\/li>\n<li>Heart<\/li>\n<li>Small intestine<\/li>\n<li>Bladder<\/li>\n<li>Kidney<\/li>\n<li>Heart governor<\/li>\n<li>Triple heater (there is no equivalent for this set of organs in western medicine, but think of them as a set beginning with your thorax and ending below your abdomen)<\/li>\n<li>Gall bladder<\/li>\n<li>Liver<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>5. Begin tapping<\/h3>\n<p>Begin tapping under the arm below the armpit while repeating your phrase out loud. You should repeat the phrase three times. Moving down the body, tap the following points seven times while reciting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eyebrow<\/li>\n<li>Side of the eye<\/li>\n<li>Under the eye<\/li>\n<li>Under the nose<\/li>\n<li>Chin<\/li>\n<li>Beginning of the collarbone<\/li>\n<li>Under the arm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finish back at the beginning under the arm. End your sequence by rating your distress once again.
