Just don\u2019t forget your gloves.<\/p>\n<h3>Run Longer to Last Longer<\/h3>\n<p>For many, the beginning of a new year spells the start of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/inform\/everything-you-need-to-know-before-you-run-a-virtual-marathon\/\">marathon training<\/a> plan. Despite plummeting temperatures, outdoor runners have been dispelling the myth that a winter training plan will lead to illness, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/research-debunks-myth-that-strenuous-exercise-suppresses-the-immune-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Bath study<\/a> finding that endurance exercise may actually boost your immunity.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that, during exercise, the number of illness-busting T cells increased tenfold, and are relocated to areas that are more susceptible to infection during cold weather \u2014 including your lungs. This correlates with findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/in-depth\/aerobic-exercise\/art-20045541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, which showed how regular bouts of outdoor exercise could reduce susceptibility to the flu by 20-30 percent.<\/p>\n<h3>You Could Metabolise Brown Fat<\/h3>\n<p>As described in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/out-in-the-cold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Health Publishing<\/a>, colder climes may help stimulate \u201cmetabolically active brown fat\u201d that some adults retain since childhood. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11124132\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Arizona University study<\/a> found that cold weather training could lead to a 34 percent increase in your V02 max, as well as helping your running pace increase by a not-so-insignificant 29 percent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-336628 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/01\/AdobeStock_305689388-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>UK Winter Running Conditions Could Be Ideal<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cStudies [at the University of Aberdeen\u2019s medical school] have shown that the ideal temperature for making endurance performance gains is actually 10-11\u00b0C,\u201d said Chris Tyler, senior lecturer in environmental physiology at Roehampton University, southwest London to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/uk\/a775630\/why-you-should-run-in-cold-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Runner\u2019s World<\/a>. \u201cEither side of that and you start experiencing a drop in how long you can keep going at the same intensity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s thought that this is due to your heart rate as, in colder weather, your body doesn\u2019t need to pump blood to your body\u2019s peripheries, so you enjoy a greater central volume of blood. \u201cFor the same pace, you can run that at a lower heart rate \u2013 up to around 15 beats per minute fewer,\u201d explains Tyler. Use this extra energy to make your runs further, or try new ways of training, including hill reps and fartlek sessions.<\/p>\n<h3>You\u2019ll Fight Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.)<\/h3>\n<p>S.A.D., or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that becomes more severe as winter approaches.
