But where overworking was once seen as a badge of honour, many of us are now reassessing our priorities and waking up to the very real effects of workplace stress.<\/p>\n<p>According to recent statistics, burnout is on the rise in the UK, largely fuelled by the upheaval of the pandemic, increasing workloads and remote working bleeding into leisure time.<\/p>\n<p>The latest buzz phrase sweeping TikTok offers a solution to our increasingly compromised work-life balance. Dubbed \u2018quiet quitting\u2019, it\u2019s a phenomenon that\u2019s amassed over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/quietquitting?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90 million views<\/a> on the social media app, resonating deepest with Gen-Z workers.<\/p>\n<h1>What exactly is quiet quitting?<\/h1>\n<p>Despite its name, quiet quitting has little to do with quitting your job. The mindset shift involves doing exactly what\u2019s expected of your job description and no more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quitting the idea of going above and beyond in a job and rethinking the mentality that your life needs to revolve around work,\u201d says Brean Horne, personal finance expert at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NerdWallet<\/a>. \u201cYoung employees who are dealing with the ongoing effects of the pandemic are now focusing on prioritising their work-life balance over impressing their employers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adopting a quiet quitting mentality can look different for everyone: you might refrain from offering to get involved in extra projects, refuse to answer emails outside of office hours or nix staying at your desk late to show loyalty to your boss.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase has been present on TikTok for a while, but recently took off when US influencer @zaidlepplin posted a viral video on the trend. \u201cYou\u2019re no longer subscribing to the hustle culture mentality that work has to be your life,\u201d the TikTokker urges in the video. \u201cThe reality is that work is not your life and your worth is not defined by your productive output.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While quiet quitting may be a new concept to many, the mindset shift is thought to originate from China in 2021, where the now-banned hashtag #tangping, meaning \u2018lie flat\u2019, was used as a type of social protest against societal pressures to overwork.<\/p>\n<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-393283\" src=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1-680x383.jpg 680w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/formnutrition.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/inForm-Quiet-Quitting-copy-image-1-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/h1>\n<h1>Why is it happening?<\/h1>\n<p>While the \u2018Great Resignation\u2019 saw high numbers of young and burned out workers leaving their full-time jobs, quiet quitting is a mindset for those who are still in employment.<\/p>\n<p>Burnout &#8211; a state of exhaustion caused by long-term job stress &#8211; is said to play a key role. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show there were around 602,000 workers suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety before the pandemic. By 2021, those numbers rose to 822,000 \u2013 a 38% increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the Great Resignation, quiet quitting is all about the balance of power between work and workers,\u201d says Andrew Wright, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smart-pa.com\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SmartPA<\/a>. \u201cBurnout, a post-pandemic reassessment of priorities, and more firms calling employees back into the office may be fuelling the trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is largely due to corporate culture and poor management,\u201d believes Liz Sebag-Montefiore, director at HR consultancy <a href=\"https:\/\/10eighty.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10Eighty<\/a>. \u201cEmployees want a voice, and they want recognition and development for further opportunities.\u201d According to IRIS research, nearly half of UK employees don\u2019t see a clear path to progression in their current jobs, perhaps causing them to feel like overworking is a fruitless and thankless task.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there may be a generational aspect too. \u201dYounger workers say they \u2018work to live\u2019, while older generations often, consciously or unconsciously, \u2018live to work\u2019,\u201d says Sebag-Montefiore.<\/p>\n<h1>What are the pros and cons?<\/h1>\n<p>For many years, we\u2019ve believed that the way to get ahead is to work as hard as possible. Quiet quitting may lead to a better overall work-life balance and improved boundary setting with your employer.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re unhappy at work, but leaving your job isn\u2019t an option in the current economic climate, it\u2019s also a way to protect your mental health in a global culture of overwork.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there are drawbacks to consider. \u201cIt may feel empowering to deprioritise your job and coast along,\u201d says Wright. \u201cBut in the long run, you risk losing agency over your situation &#8211; as well as the prospect of any pay rise or promotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Horne advises: \u201cBefore committing to the notion of quiet quitting, it\u2019s important to really evaluate the reasons you\u2019re doing so.
