While \u201csleep has been suggested to provide the perfect setting to measure heart rate indices,\u201d largely because it\u2019s a \u201cquiet period\u201d free from waking \u2018noise\u2019 like irregular breathing or posture, he warns that \u201cheart rate indices are not good indicators [of] good or bad sleep.\u201d In fact, he suggests that \u201csleep disruption can be a signal for stress or under recovery in of itself.\u201d Furthermore, relying on isolated metrics such as \u201cskin temperature, blood oxygen saturation or any blood markers\u201d isn\u2019t enough to accurately appraise sleep quality or effective recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gupta explains that \u201cgood sleep is represented by different dimensions \u2013 these are broadly considered as the quality, timing, and duration of sleep.\u201d Crucially, he adds, \u201ceven with a broader understanding of sleep, it is difficult to know if sleep has been good, or not, without connecting it with daytime experience of performance and wellbeing.\u201d This leads to a more nuanced perspective: \u201cDon\u2019t overestimate the impact of poor sleep on performance, but don\u2019t underestimate the impact of sleep on wellbeing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He observes that \u201cmany misconceptions around sleep come from an understanding of sleep that is driven by a narrow view of sleep,\u201d and one which is overplayed in people\u2019s lives.\u201d This can cultivate an unhealthy attitude, he continues, \u201cbound up in treating sleep like it is a performance which [has] outcome goals to achieve and the need for it be optimal every night.\u201d Ultimately, \u201cwhat good sleep looks like for someone is individualised to the person in a very specific context, so a one-size-fits-all understanding of good sleep isn\u2019t helpful.\u201d If you find yourself consistently dissatisfied with your sleep, Gupta advises that \u201csomething is going on which can be explored further with support and guidance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Not All Data is Created Equally<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, all this insight into sleep\u2019s complexities might feel like \u201ca lot to consider and can feel quite overwhelming for someone who is struggling with their sleep,\u201d as Dr. Gupta acknowledges. The truth is, he says, \u201csleep works best when it is self-operating in the background and attended to infrequently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simply put: it shouldn\u2019t be another performance metric to agonise over.
