Chemists create artificial flavours to mimic natural tastes, but the compounds aren\u2019t derived from the original food source. In essence, an artificial flavour is engineered to <i>resemble<\/i> a natural taste without actually coming from that natural ingredient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chemically, a natural and an artificial flavour can sometimes be very similar (even identical in molecular structure). But origins matter. A strawberry flavour made from real strawberries and one concocted in a lab might both taste like strawberry, yet choosing natural over artificial isn\u2019t just a question of taste. It\u2019s important to understand this difference, because \u201cnatural\u201d doesn\u2019t mean the same thing everywhere.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>In the European Union:<\/b> A flavour can <b>only<\/b> be called \u201cnatural\u201d if it comes <i>exclusively<\/i> from natural sources and is produced using approved traditional processes (no synthetic tricks). There\u2019s no grey area here. In fact, EU law (Regulation EC No. 1334\/2008) specifies that a flavouring must consist of 100% natural substances to be labeled as natural <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=celex:32008R1334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=celex:32008R1334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adv-bio.com\/making-sure-your-ingredients-comply-with-legislation\/#:~:text=According%20to%20Regulation%20,word%20%E2%80%9Cnatural%E2%80%9D%20on%20food%20labels\"><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span><\/a>. That means if your strawberry flavour doesn\u2019t actually come from strawberries (or another real food source clearly identified), it cannot be marketed as a natural flavour in Europe. The emphasis is on truth in sourcing, the label has to reflect the real origin of the flavour.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>In the United States:<\/b> The FDA\u2019s definition of \u201cnatural flavour\u201d is much more lenient. As long as the flavour originally comes from a natural source (plant or animal material), it can be called \u201cnatural\u201d &#8211; even if it\u2019s been heavily processed, modified, or mixed with synthetic solvents and additives along the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-21\/chapter-I\/subchapter-B\/part-101?#p-101.22(a)(3)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-21\/chapter-I\/subchapter-B\/part-101?#p-101.22(a)(3)\"><span class=\"s2\">2)<\/span><\/a>. In other words, a U.S. product could list \u201cnatural flavour\u201d on the label even if that flavour was created in a lab using chemical processes, so long as it started from something nature-made at the very beginning. This more relaxed definition means some \u201cnatural\u201d flavours in U.S. foods might not meet EU standards or consumer expectations of what a natural flavour should be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">What does this mean for you? It means that where your product is made (and under which rules) affects how honest that \u201cnatural flavour\u201d label truly is. Form is a UK-based company, so when we say natural, it meets the strict EU criteria.
