The upward curve of vegan diets and lifestyles shows no sign of slowing, and celebrities have not been immune to the trend.
Keep up with the showbiz-press and it seems a new vegan celebrity reveals themself every other day. A selection of those stars even go so far as to use their platform to promote and educate their cause.
From elite athletes to pop stars and actors, here are eight vegan celebrities who don’t cover their mouths when they eat their plants.
8 of Veganism’s Biggest Celebrity Advocates
Pamela Anderson
It’s been 20 years since former Baywatch actor Pamela Anderson first posed nude for PETA. She’s been extremely vocal on the subjects of animal welfare and vegan diets ever since.
Among the many strings to her vegan activist bow are urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to offer vegan food in prisons, offering to adopt every dog used for animal testing at Texas A&M University and launching her own vegan shoes and champagne brand.
Joaquin Phoenix
The Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix is a long-time vegan and one of Hollywood’s most vocal anti-speciesists, once branding animal consumption “absurd and barbaric” in a mainstream interview.
His collaborations with Veganuary and PETA have helped further spread his message; he famously appeared next to a chicken in an advertisement for the latter, along with the words “We Are All Animals”.
Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman removed meat from her diet at the age of nine, and dairy soon followed.
The book Eating Animals played a big part in helping her understand the terrible conditions farm animals face, and she incidentally went on to narrate the documentary by the same name.
She has been vocal about the subject elsewhere too, though, and her role as a mother and women’s rights activist have also played into her passion for the subject.
“Only after I became active in women’s issues did I realise my veganism was related to those very issues,” she once told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Dairy and eggs don’t just come from cows and chickens; they come from female cows and female chickens. We are exploiting female bodies and abusing the magic of female animals to create eggs and milk.”
Lewis Hamilton
Britain’s most decorated racing driver Lewis Hamilton is fast becoming veganism’s most prolific advocate. Motivated both by its impact on his health and the health of the planet, his dedication to communicating the benefits of going plant-based translates on Instagram and real-life actions alike.
For instance, Hamilton recently made headlines for his part in convincing Mercedes to make cars with animal-free interiors, and aim for more sustainability in general within Formula 1.
Novak Djokovic
Five-time Serbian Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic has powered his vast athletic accomplishment with plants.
It was after discovering several dietary allergies and intolerances that the 32-year-old was prompted to make the change by his nutritionist. But he was quick to find that changing his eating habits had huge upshots for his performance too, crediting his new plant-based diet aided recovery and improved overall health.
He now owns a vegan restaurant, Eqvita, in Monte Carlo, and was an executive producer on 2019’s The Game Changers.
Venus & Serena Williams
On being diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome – an autoimmune disease which causes fatigue – Venus Williams turned to a vegan diet to help manage her diagnosis while maintaining performance on the court.
"It changed my whole life,” Venus told Health magazine in 2017. “It changed the pace that I live at. It changed everything… there’s something about when you’re eating healthy food, it makes you feel proud.”
Sister Serena allegedly follows suit mostly around competition times to ensure she has optimal health in the moments she needs it most.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus is not one to shy away from speaking out about causes close to her heart, so the vegan community are fortunate to have her in their corner.
The multitalented singer promotes veganism wherever she can, including on her Instagram and on her body. Not only does she showcase vegan-friendly fashion choices when she performs and at events, but she’s also tattooed the Vegan Society’s sunflower logo on her arm.
