About Form’s Compostable Packaging
In Form’s commitment to achieving Net Zero and becoming as planet-friendly as we can possibly be, our compostable packaging is a big step towards reducing waste in our product line.
When we first started out, plastic stand-up pouches were the most sustainable packaging option available to us. We were always on the hunt for something better though, and with landfill waste a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, we wanted to act fast.
Which is why our development of a full-colour printed stand-up compostable pack was one of our greatest achievements last year. Coupled with our giving model and a few other sustainable initiatives you can read about here, it played a big part in helping us achieve B Corporation certification – the first UK protein brand to do so.
As rollout across our protein range continues, here’s a little bit of information on how it all works.
How is Form’s compostable packaging made?
The bioplast we use to make our pouches is made from potato starch, a plant-based renewable source. It’s both plasticizer- and GMO-free and is made by blown film extrusion for complete biodegradability. We bond this to a paper printed with water-based inks to provide an air barrier that keeps our products fresh. That way, it boasts excellent shelf life but will readily biodegrade in an industrial composting environment.
Why did Form choose compostable packaging?
By using renewable sources, we save fossil resources and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in both our production and waste cycle. Compared to conventional plastics, this reduction is shown to be anywhere between 30 and 70 per cent.
What should I do with my empty packs?
Products made of bioplast resins will biodegrade in fewer than 180 days. Like conventional plastics, they can be recycled with other plant-based biodegradable bioplastics, but the preferred end-of-life option is as compost. Bioplast resins comply with compostability labels such as OK compost, so you can pop them in your kitchen food bin to be disintegrated in industrial composting units within 90 days.
